MALE SKINCARE: WHAT DO YOU NEED TO KNOW?
When we talk about male skincare, the opinion of men about a complete skincare routine is practically unanimous: “It's all about freshness. The products are expensive and many, and the routine itself is complicated and takes time. I don't have the patience, nor the disposition to do so! ”.
Well…. know that this, besides being a lie, is a huge disservice to them. After all, the habit of practising certain face care is one of the most powerful tools we have against most of the common problems we face. Yes, I'm talking about acne, wrinkles and even sun damage.

The problem is that, as this topic has become "fashionable", especially in the universe of digital influencers, it is difficult to separate the necessary from the caprice. It is so much information (and often useless) that we are even dizzy! Then it is easy to give up this self-care, right?
Thinking about it, today I decided to do this text with everything you need to know about male skincare. Prepared?
After all: what is the importance of skincare?
The skin, in addition to being a “business card” for a person, is also the largest organ in the human body and, like all others, deserves a lot of care.
However, an effective skincare routine requires more than just washing your face with soap and water. It's like anything else in life that is worthwhile: it takes commitment, consistency and care, not to mention a healthy amount of experimentation until you find the right products for you.
The good news is that developing a skincare routine from scratch requires only a few simple steps. And believe me: you will be surprised at the results you will see after a few weeks.
So, continue with me and I will explain how to start it and keep it the right way. Come on?
How to take care of the skin on a man's face?
Although there are significant differences between men's and women's skin (men's skin, for example, is thicker and oily), the basic elements of an effective skincare plan remain the same.
Find out what your skin type is
The first step is to learn to identify and understand your own skin type. That way, you will know how to take care of it in the right way, as well as selecting the most suitable products for the routine.
For this, the best approach is to consult with a dermatologist. Only he will be able to tell you exactly what your skin type is. The different categories include:
sensitive skin: usually burns or gets irritated easily, whether due to climate change, contact with a specific surface or product, and so on;
normal skin: it is more balanced, has fine pores and uniformity on its surface;
dry skin: because it is unable to retain the necessary volume of water to stay healthy, it has a scaly, rough texture, as well as an opaque hue. In some cases, it can cause itching and irritation;
oily skin: produces large amounts of sebum and, therefore, is more likely to develop blackheads and pimples. Also, it has excessive shine and pores are more open and visible.
Mixed skin: it is usually normal or dry in the cheek regions, and oily in the T zone (forehead, nose and chin). In areas with more sebum, it has more evident and open pores and, consequently, more propensity to develop blackheads and pimples.
Understand the basics of skincare
Before entering the skincare routine alone, you must first understand the basic precepts of skincare. Are they:
1. Know exactly what you are going through on the face
Study more about the ingredients present in skincare products, understand what they are for and know which ones are best for your skin type.
If you have acne-prone skin, for example, look for cosmetics and dermo-cosmetics that have the description of “for oily skin” or “non-comedogenic”. Now, if in addition to being oily, your skin is still sensitive, give preference to hypoallergenic and fragrance-free products. Understood?
2. Wash your face with the right products
Washing your face daily with soap and water, although common, is horrible for male and female skin! After all, the soap contains aggressive ingredients that can dry out and irritate your skin.
For this reason, ALWAYS use facial soaps and, preferably, in the form of pumps, to hinder the contamination of the product by bacteria. AND AH: remember to read the labels to choose the appropriate type for your case, and never fail to consult the dermatologist.
Also, there are other important tips to wash your face the right way:
- give preference to cold, or at most lukewarm water,
- you don't need to wash your face many times a day. The ideal is to do it when you wake up, and when you sleep. Otherwise, there may be a rebound effect on the skin, making it more oily.
3. Be careful and selective when shaving
For some men, razors often work very well. However, if you often have bumps, allergies or ingrown hairs when using them, look for other alternatives.
When finding the best shaving method for your skin, be sure to:
- moisten the area where the blade will pass with water or shaving lotion (never stop reading the labels to choose the best one for your face);
- trim the hair in the direction it is born and grow, and not the other way around;
- the blade before putting it in contact with the face, and never share it with others;
- change the blade every 7 times you shave.
4. Moisturize your skin daily
A hydrated skin hardly has many wrinkles and fine lines and has a more youthful and healthy appearance. Never stop consulting with your dermatologist to find out which option is best for you.
Generally, the best products for skin hydration have hyaluronic acid in their composition.
5. Keep an eye
Check your skin regularly (at least once a day, in front of a clean, well-lit mirror). See if new spots or warts appear that itch, bleed or change colour. These are usually early signs of skin cancer.
If you notice any suspicious spots/spots, don't hesitate to make an appointment with the dermatologist.
6. Use sunscreen
Use sunscreen every time you leave the house, and apply it at least 15 minutes before exposing yourself to the sun. This practice helps to prevent various skin damage caused by the sun, such as wrinkles, age spots and even cancer.
Tip: do not forget to apply the sunscreen on very exposed, but "forgettable" areas of the body, such as the scalp, ears, neck, lips, hands, elbows and sole of the foot.
For better protection, use broad-spectrum, water-resistant products with an SPF over 30. Remember to apply them again every two hours, or immediately after swimming or sweating.
Finally, indulge in the facial skincare routine!
The only person truly capable of establishing a good skincare routine for you, as I said, is the dermatologist. However, I already tell you in advance that most skincare routines will include the following steps:
- cleaning,
- hydration,
- sunscreen.
In more advanced cases, between these three steps can be added:
- exfoliating (physical or chemical, with retinoids);
- toning;
- cream for the eye area;
- treatment masks (day or night).
Tip: your doctor will explain this to you, but the applications usually happen in the order of the lightest and most watery product, for the heaviest, with the thickest texture.
Anyway ...
Did you see that the basics of skincare, for any man, is not an animal with seven heads? By establishing a good skincare routine, you can bet that your face will look much healthier, lighter and stronger in a few weeks.
If you have the need to come with heavier products, you can rest assured: the dermatologist will guide you correctly, with everything you need to know to resolve your condition.
Also, a good skincare routine for everyone and see you next time!
